Chocolate Strawberry Slab Pie

“FOOD IS NOT ABOUT IMPRESSING PEOPLE.  IT’S ABOUT MAKING THEM FEEL COMFORTABLE.”  Ina Garten

Chocolate Strawberry Slab Pie | From My Sweet Heart

It’s always great when a fussy dessert turns out really well.  But I am even happier when I am able to casually throw a few ingredients together and the result is just as satisfying.  This month, Roxana, of Roxana’s Home Baking and the fabulous leader of The Chocolate Party challenged us to pair chocolate with strawberries!  It’s such a winning combination in my book.  Strawberries always remind me of spring and summer, and strawberry picking at my favorite farm.  And so I wanted to make a rustic dessert, and one that tastes like home. Berry Smoothie Ice Cream Pie

PIE IS A SYMBOL OF SOMETHING BIGGER THAN MOM AND HER WAY WITH DESSERTS.”  Pascale le Draoulec

Berry Smoothie Ice Cream Pie | From My Sweet Heart

Well if this mom has a way with desserts, her kids would never know.  They don’t eat them much!  I don’t know what to say other than I can’t believe they’re mine.  But my kids just aren’t sweet eaters.  Birthday cakes?  Unless it’s plain vanilla, no icing, with a slight sprinkling of powdered sugar…..maybe.  Ice cream?  Now we’re talking!  So when the “fabulous 14”, the fun loving, creative and talented women who brought you Crêpe Week, Beer Week and Soup Week decided on Sweets Week, my head went straight to this recipe.

It has been a really fun week of Sweets for Your Sweetie Pies.  The true sweetie pies in my life are my boys (now young men).  So I decided on this incredible Berry Smoothie Ice Cream Pie.  Every luscious layer of this ice cream pie blends together to have you feeling like you are enjoying your favorite smoothiePureed strawberries, bananas and blueberries are combined with vanilla frozen yogurt and stacked on a sweet granola pie crust.  Your spoon may not be fast enough and you’ll be wishing you had a straw!  And I’ve put together a Pie Package for one lucky winner. . . . . Chocolate Coconut Pie

IT ISN’T THE FLAVOR OF COCONUT THAT TROUBLES ME, BUT THE TEXTURE.  I FEEL AS IF I’M CHEWING ON A SWEETENED CUTICLE.”  Steve Almond

Chocolate Coconut Pie | From My Sweet Heart

This quote really puts a grin on my face because I know that coconut is one of those flavors that people either love or hate.  For me, I LOVE coconut!  And so I was really happy to learn that it was the featured ingredient at The Chocolate Party!  A huge thanks to Roxana, from Roxana’s Home Baking, for organizing this group of wonderful cooks and bakers who are happy to pair a special ingredient with chocolate once a month.  The thing I love most about coconut is . . . . . Pumpkin Cheesecake Pie

“PROMISE YOURSELF TO WAKE UP EVERY MORNING WITH A THANKFUL HEART, AS THOUGH EACH DAY WAS THANKSGIVING DAY.”  kiggundu wilson

Pumpkin Cheesecake Pie | From My Sweet Heart

My apologies to my baking buddies, from the yet un-named, but little baking group that could, for being late in publishing this post.  This month, we decided to make life a bit easy for ourselves around this hectic time, and simply post a favorite side dish or baked good that typically graces our Thanksgiving tables.  I have to give GREAT credit to all those who blog dinner recipes!  I had two ideas to share.  One was of a sweet potato casserole.  But I have to tell you….trying to get that onto my Thanksgiving dinner table while everyone is sitting around starving, and then saying….“wait….I have to snap a picture first!”…..was a bit tricky.  So to avoid a massive food fight, I opted for dessert instead.  (We baking bloggers definitely have it easier!).  I decided that when everyone fell into their food comas, I would photograph this pie.  Suspiciously, though, there was already a slice cut from it!!!  But I couldn’t be upset.  I’m a big advocate of  ‘eat dessert first’!  And it was THAT good.  I couldn’t decide between making a pumpkin cheesecake or a pumpkin pie.  So I combined both into this luscious pumpkin cheesecake pie!  A perfect ending to a lovely day. . . . . Sweety Pies

Sweety Pies | From My Sweet HeartA GREAT KITCHEN READ!!!

SWEETY PIES…..Patty Pinner

“An Uncommon Collection of Womanish Observations, With Pie

The most fascinating cookbooks to me are those that give an insight into the life of the person writing it.  In this cookbook, you are served up so much more.  Patty Pinner shares her love of pie through the recipe and memoir contributions of her friends and family.  All of whom are women, with a story all their own to share.

Ms. Pinner writes, “In the same way that I enjoy collecting recipes, I take real pleasure in gathering the stories of the women the recipes belong to.  I am a firm believer that what a woman cooks is a window into her womanly personality – what she thinks, how she behaves, how she feels about herself, and the people she cooks for.

While the culinary focus of this book is creating the perfect pie, you will not be able to help but smile as you read about each of the women offering their most seductive, sumptuous, and soulful dessert recipes.  To many, the all American Pie is the ultimate expression of comfort and goodness.  And in this book, clearly, these women share the same sense of pride and passion about pie and their own personal recipes.  But as you stir from chapter to chapter, you are pulled and kneaded and enfolded into what feels like such a sense of sisterhood, and friendship, and community.  And you find that you don’t know which pie you would like to make first.  Not because they all look incredibly delicious; but because when you make that pie, you feel like you will be taking on some of the character and personality of the woman who created it.  And these women are warm and witty, familiar and fascinating, sassy and spirited; and I don’t know who I want to emulate first!  I have tried many already, and while they all have been good,  one of my very favorites is the oatmeal nut pie.  Inside the 168 pages of this beautiful book you will find…. Five Spice Pear Pie Bars with Orange Icing

“AUTUMN, THE YEAR’S LAST, LOVELIEST SMILE.”  William Cullen Bryant

Five Spice Pear Pie Bars with Orange Icing | From My Sweet Heart

With fall baking comes pies!  Lots of pies!  I love pie and I love making them.  And the finished product is always so impressive.  But when you just want an itty bitty bite…. it’s hard to cut yourself just a little sliver.  You know what I mean!  That piece of pie, which is so tall and full and stands so proud on your plate…..well as delicious as it may be ….it’s reduced to a fruity crumbly mess when you try to cut just a thin slice.  So here is all of the goodness of a pie, in this case pear, in a flatter form.  I’ve cut these into little pie wedges; but you can cut them into bars or squares.  So cut yourself a small piece ….because you’ll still have the bottom crust, the top crust and all that great fruit in between!  And the interesting ingredient in this recipe (at least to me) was…….. Lotta Lemon Pie

“IT IS PROBABLE THAT THE LEMON IS THE MOST VALUABLE OF ALL FRUIT FOR PRESERVING HEALTH.”  Maud Grieve: A Modern Herbal (1931)

Lotta Lemon Pie | From My Sweet Heart

Ahhhh Maud….I hope you are right!  Then there’s all the more reason we should all eat this sweet, creamy, tangy pie …and often!  It’s not that there’s a crazy amount of lemon in this pie that makes it so good.  But it’s what’s going on in the layers that makes it incredible.  The most concentration of tangy lemon flavor is in the crust.  The lemon cream is light and sweet.  And then the whipped cream on top is only kissed with the zest of the lemon.  So each bite has you puckering, savoring, licking your lips and digging in for more!  The secret to the tart, lemony crust is…… [Read more...]

Blueberry Pie Ice Cream

“I GO RUNNING WHEN I HAVE TO.  WHEN THE ICE CREAM TRUCK IS DOING SIXTY.”  Wendy Liebman

Blueberry Pie Ice Cream | From My Sweet Heart

This is so far the BEST  ice cream I have ever tasted in my life!  I love it because it truly is a great combination of pie and ice cream.  I’ve seen other recipes include graham crackers in their version of ‘pie ice creams’.  But pie to me, is crust, not crackers.

This ice cream has all the components of pie a la mode.  Sweet cream ice cream with a hint of cinnamon, fresh blueberry compote, and chunks of sweet and savory cream cheese pie crust.  You won’t be running for the ice cream truck with a pint of this in your freezer!  Check out how easy it is to throw together…….. Blueberry-Vanilla Cream Cheese Hand Pies

“THE FIRST LAW OF PIES:  NO PASTRY, NO PIE.”  Janet Clarkson

Blueberry Vanilla Cream Cheese Hand PIes | From My Sweet Heart

Truthfully, I’m not sure what constitutes pie anymore.  What used to be so identifiable as sweet slices of fruit between two golden crusts has changed so much!  Pies are fried, frozen, served in a jar or stuck on a stick!  And when pastry is involved, is it a pie or is it a turnover?  I’ll call this blueberry cream cheese hand pie, a portable pocket of perfection!

I originally made this about a year ago, but it is such an easy and amazing weekend recipe, that I wanted to make it again.  The pictures and my text are updated but this post is not new.

This recipe is simple and  delicious!  The pies are incredibly light given the buttery, flaky crust and the amount of blueberries and cream cheese packed inside of them.  They come together quickly, but the end result is something pretty special.  I hope you will give them a try and feel free to mix and match berries and liqueur.   [Read more...]
