Sweety Pies

A GREAT KITCHEN READ!!!

SWEETY PIES…..Patty Pinner

“An Uncommon Collection of Womanish Observations, With Pie

The most fascinating cookbooks to me are those that give an insight into the life of the person writing it.  In this cookbook, you are served up so much more.  Patty Pinner shares her love of pie through the recipe and memoir contributions of her friends and family.  All of whom are women, with a story all their own to share.

Ms. Pinner writes, “In the same way that I enjoy collecting recipes, I take real pleasure in gathering the stories of the women the recipes belong to.  I am a firm believer that what a woman cooks is a window into her womanly personality – what she thinks, how she behaves, how she feels about herself, and the people she cooks for.”

While the culinary focus of this book is creating the perfect pie, you will not be able to help but smile as you read about each of the women offering their most seductive, sumptuous, and soulful dessert recipes.  To many, the all American Pie is the ultimate expression of comfort and goodness.  And in this book, clearly, these women share the same sense of pride and passion about pie and their own personal recipes.  But as you stir from chapter to chapter, you are pulled and kneaded and enfolded into what feels like such a sense of sisterhood, and friendship, and community.  And you find that you don’t know which pie you would like to make first.  Not because they all look incredibly delicious; but because when you make that pie, you feel like you will be taking on some of the character and personality of the woman who created it.  And these women are warm and witty, familiar and fascinating, sassy and spirited; and I don’t know who I want to emulate first!  I have tried many already, and while they all have been good,  one of my very favorites is the oatmeal nut pie.  Inside the 168 pages of this beautiful book you will find…. Five Spice Pear Pie Bars with Orange Icing

“AUTUMN, THE YEAR’S LAST, LOVELIEST SMILE.”  William Cullen Bryant

With fall baking comes pies!  Lots of pies!  I love pie and I love making them.  And the finished product is always so impressive.  But when you just want an itty bitty bite…. it’s hard to cut yourself just a little sliver.  You know what I mean!  That piece of pie, which is so tall and full and stands so proud on your plate…..well as delicious as it may be ….it’s reduced to a fruity crumbly mess when you try to cut just a thin slice.  So here is all of the goodness of a pie, in this case pear, in a flatter form.  I’ve cut these into little pie wedges; but you can cut them into bars or squares.  So cut yourself a small piece ….because you’ll still have the bottom crust, the top crust and all that great fruit in between!  And the interesting ingredient in this recipe (at least to me) was…….. Lotta Lemon Pie

“IT IS PROBABLE THAT THE LEMON IS THE MOST VALUABLE OF ALL FRUIT FOR PRESERVING HEALTH.”  Maud Grieve: A Modern Herbal (1931)

Ahhhh Maud….I hope you are right!  Then there’s all the more reason we should all eat this sweet, creamy, tangy pie …and often!  It’s not that there’s a crazy amount of lemon in this pie that makes it so good.  But it’s what’s going on in the layers that makes it incredible.  The most concentration of tangy lemon flavor is in the crust.  The lemon cream is light and sweet.  And then the whipped cream on top is only kissed with the zest of the lemon.  So each bite has you puckering, savoring, licking your lips and digging in for more!  The secret to the tart, lemony crust is…… [Read more...]

Mikey’s Favorite Creamy Peanut Butter Pie

“PERHAPS THEY ARE NOT STARS, BUT RATHER OPENINGS IN HEAVEN WHERE THE LOVE OF OUR LOST ONES POURS THROUGH AND SHINES DOWN UPON US TO LET US KNOW THEY ARE HAPPY.”  Author Unknown

There is no greater pain than being happy and in love with someone one day, only to find them gone from your life the next.  A fellow food blogger, Jennifer at In Jennie’s Kitchen, lost her husband suddenly and unexpectedly. And my heart goes out to her and her family during this difficult and painful time.  My son Matt, who is only 20, attended his second funeral of the summer 3 days ago.  And so while I am struggling with trying to make sense of it all…..of life, and love, and loss……I can only imagine the devastation that Jennifer is dealing with.  I pray that she will find the strength and support that she needs.  And I wish her and her family peace in the coming days.  Actually…..I wish this for all of us.

Jennifer asked that others show their support by making her husband Mikey’s favorite pie…..Creamy Peanut Butter Pie.  And while this post is a couple of days late….I wanted to show my support for Jennifer and for a whole community of wonderful people, who have always come together in support of one another….and who have personally helped me along the way.

I never imagined that I would find so many friendships through food blogging, and that it would change my life in such a profound way.  And I love you and thank you all.

So in the future….to anyone that comes upon this post in search of a great peanut butter pie recipe…..please follow the link to Jennifer and check up on her and take a moment to send her warm thoughts.   And in turn…..be sure to celebrate this pie with those that you love.

Blueberry Pie Ice Cream

“I GO RUNNING WHEN I HAVE TO.  WHEN THE ICE CREAM TRUCK IS DOING SIXTY.”  Wendy Liebman

This is so far the BEST  ice cream I have ever tasted in my life!  I love it because it truly is a great combination of pie and ice cream.  I’ve seen other recipes include graham crackers in their version of ‘pie ice creams’.  But pie to me, is crust, not crackers.

This ice cream has all the components of pie a la mode.  Sweet cream ice cream with a hint of cinnamon, fresh blueberry compote, and chunks of sweet and savory cream cheese pie crust.  You won’t be running for the ice cream truck with a pint of this in your freezer!  Check out how easy it is to throw together…….. Blueberry-Vanilla Cream Cheese Hand Pies

“A MOTHER IS A PERSON WHO SEEING THERE ARE ONLY FOUR PIECES OF PIE FOR FIVE PEOPLE, PROMPTLY ANNOUNCES SHE NEVER DID CARE FOR PIE.”  Tenneva Jordan

Well the bad news is, it is Mother’s Day weekend and my guys are once again away at school.  The good news is, this recipe makes 10 hand pies and there’s only one of me!!!  This is a perfect Saturday morning recipe.  It is quick and easy and amazing in flavor!  I love, love, love blueberries!  And I will be using them a lot as spring turns into summer.

But this recipe is simple and  delicious!  The pies are incredibly light given the buttery, flaky crust and the amount of blueberries and cream cheese packed inside of them.  They come together quickly, but the end result is something pretty special.  I hope you will give them a try and feel free to mix and match berries and liqueur.  Yum!
