Orange Shortbread with Fleur de Sel

My favorite cookie is on Baked Sunday Mornings!

Orange Shortbread with Fleur de Sel | From My Sweet Heart

Baked Sunday Mornings is a group of fun and fearless fanatics for the cookbooks of Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito.  A big thanks to Sheri from Pork Cracklins, Bourbonnatrix from Bourbonnatrix Bakes, and Susan from Create Amazing Meals for all they do in organizing this wonderful baking group!  This week’s recipe is from Baked Explorations, and it’s a GOOD one!  My absolute favorite cookie in the world is shortbread.  And this classic shortbread recipe is fantastic!  These cookies are light and buttery, with a simple sweet flavor.  On a scale of 1 -5, this is definitely 5 whisks for me!  Just as the authors like to throw a twist in here and there, I did so, too.  And one slight change for the sake of necessity and what I had in my pantry. . . . . Ambrosia Milkshake

“ACCEPT WHAT PEOPLE OFFER.  DRINK THEIR MILKSHAKES.  TAKE THEIR LOVE.”  Wally Lamb

Ambrosia Milkshake | From My Sweet Heart

I’m toasting today to Ambrosia.  That salad we all hate to love…but we love it anyway!  Named as food for the gods.  Will this milkshake turn back the years and give you ageless immortality?  No….but I sure felt like a kid when I was drinking it!  I know there are several versions of the Ambrosia salad out there.  Here is my version all twisted in a milkshake.  Juicy pineapplesSweet mandarin orangesLuscious whipped creamChewy bits of coconut.  And soft, chewy marshmallows.  Where are the marshmallows you ask?. . . . Mandarin Orange & Pistachio Meringues

“THE AIR UP THERE IN THE CLOUDS IS VERY PURE AND FINE, BRACING AND DELICIOUS.  AND WHY SHOULDN’T IT BE?  IT IS THE SAME THE ANGELS BREATHE.”  Mark Twain

Mandarin Orange & Pistachio Meringues | From My Sweet Heart

There was a time when I dreamed about traveling state to state, stopping off to see a baseball game played in every stadium in the country.  Well that dream has changed only slightly.  I would much rather travel the country visiting bakeries!  Have you seen the show Unique Sweets?  Well they often have a theme for each show, but they basically feature several bakeries across the country and one of the sweets that they are famous for.  One show featured the bakery, Proof, in Los Angeles.  And one of the things Proof is known for are these meringues which are about the size of your hand and filled with flavor!  They offer chocolate and pistachio, citrus and coconut, and strawberry.  What fascinated me is that the strawberry was made with dehydrated strawberries.  So I did my best to recreate these using….. Citrus Curd { and some quick desserts}

“FOR LAST YEAR’S WORDS BELONG TO LAST YEAR’S LANGUAGE AND NEXT YEAR’S AWAIT ANOTHER VOICE.  AND TO MAKE AN END IS TO MAKE A BEGINNING.”  T.S. Eliot

Citrus Curd | From My Sweet Heart

Happy New Year!  I hope this is a great year for everyone!  In the past, I have made and tried to stick to resolutions which included exercising more and swearing less, raising my expectations and lowering my expectations, losing weight and finding joy, living with grace vs. putting myself first more often!  Oh yes….and take my vitamins!  But what worked for me last year and what I look forward to again this year…is to live simply.

This year, I’ll start by getting back to basics again.  I love those very simple recipes that lend themselves to versatility.   Like lemon curd.  It’s been on my mind again lately since watching a cooking show where lemon curd was made for the whole purpose of dipping biscotti.  Who knew?  I’ve only dipped my biscotti in coffee or tea!  I’ve made Martha Stewart’s lemon curd recipe before and it is really good!  But Alex Guarnaschelli adds orange juice to her lemon curd.  And so I thought….why not go for the trifecta!  A combo of both recipes with the addition of lime!  And thus….citrus curd was born.  So go ahead and dip away or read on for more scrumptious recipes…… [Read more...]

Orange Nutmeg Popovers

“MY UNCLE ORDERED POPOVERS FROM THE RESTAURANT’S BILL OF FARE.  AND, WHEN THEY WERE SERVED, HE REGARDED THEM WITH A PENETRATING STARE.  AND THEN HE SPOKE GREAT WORDS OF WISDOM AS HE SAT THERE ON THAT CHAIR:  TO EAT THESE THINGS, SAID MY UNCLE, YOU MUST EXERCISE GREAT CARE.  YOU MAY SWALLOW DOWN WHAT’S SOLID BUT YOU MUST SPIT OUT THE AIR! ”  Dr. Seuss

Orange Nutmeg Popovers | From My Sweet Heart

The thing which makes popovers so easy to create is that it only requires 5 basic ingredients and they are all combined in a blender!  I haven’t  popovers in some time.  I recall a restaurant chain when I lived in Boston, called The Proud Popover.  While my memory about this is vague, I do remember that the popover was the canvas for a host of fillings from savory to sweet.  And it’s what you add to your 5 basic elements that determines this.  Today, I chose to add orange zest, freshly grated nutmeg and freshly cracked black pepper!  There is such a subtle hint of sweetness and rather a warmth and heat which permeates each sumptuous bite of this oddly formed, egg-like bread!  I served these orange nutmeg popovers with….. Chocolate Orange Pots de Creme with Sugared Shortbread Spoons

“HAPPINESS.  SIMPLE AS A GLASS OF CHOCOLATE OR TORTUOUS AS THE HEART.  BITTER.  SWEET.  ALIVE.”  Joanne Harris (Chocolat)

Chocolate Orange Pots de Creme with Sugared Shortbread Spoons | From My Sweet Heart

Well, I have to give a shout out and a special thank you to Elle at Bromography for the reminder that today is National Pots de Creme Day!!!  Elle writes a wonderfully eclectic blog which features restaurant & food reviews, food facts, recipes and special features and events in her community!  Though she is based in NYC, I really enjoy reading her.  I think you will, too!  So while browsing her blog, be sure to check out her article about  National Pots de Creme DayWoo Hoo!  This is one holiday that I am more than happy to celebrate!

Today, I made  chocolate orange pots de creme.  It’s just a combination that I really enjoy.  (Chocolate and raspberries take a close second!)  I love these creamy pots so much!  They look like they have the texture of a cake.  A lovely cross between a custard and a souffle.  Deceptively creamy!  And very rich and soul satisfying!  Since I have this fetish for being able to eat every aspect of my dessert, I also made……..
