Goober Cupcakes

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO HAVE A HAPPY CHILDHOOD.”  Tom Robbins

Goober Cupcakes | From My Sweet Heart

I grew up in an age where penny candy was actually a penny!  And one of my fondest childhood memories was spending a dime at ‘The Corner Store’ and filling up a little paper bag with pieces of my favorite candy.  At the movies, however, I would always buy a box of Goobers.  I wonder how much they cost at the theater these days?!

What do you do when you want to relive a piece of your childhood?  Ride a bike?  Go to the zoo?  Eat a special sweet treat? [Read more...]

OCTOBER, TUCK TINY CANDY BARS IN MY POCKETS AND CARVE MY SMILE INTO A THOUSAND PUMPKINS.”  Rainbow Rowell

Pumpkin Donuts with Cream Cheese Frosting and Candied Pepitas | From My Sweet Heart

Autumn is my favorite time of year and October is my favorite month.  The reasons are many.  I was born in October.  You can trick or treat for your favorite candy in October.  Honeycrisp apples are here!  The days are still mild.  The nights are comfortably cool.  Nature’s colors are richer and more vibrant.  My cooking becomes heartier.  And baking warms my kitchen on a regular basis.

Oh…..and the pumpkins!  So many recipes, so little time!  But I’ve decided to kick off the season with donuts!

These baked pumpkin donuts are light and airy;  iced with a little sweetened cream cheese and topped with crunchy, spiced honey pumpkin seeds.  They were also an editor’s pick and featured in Yahoo Shine in Canada!

But speaking of a thousand pumpkins . . . . .

Vintage Cakes: Butterscotch Cream Roll Up Cake

INVENTION, MY DEAR FRIENDS, IS 93% PERSPIRATION, 6% ELECTRICITY, 4% EVAPORATION, AND 2% BUTTERSCOTCH RIPPLE.”  Willy Wonka

Vintage Cakes: Butterscotch Cream Roll Up Cake | From My Sweet Heart

Butterscotch is a wonderful creation dating back to England in the mid 1800′s.  That’s vintage enough for me!  And my favorite flavor growing up was always butterscotch.  Butterscotch life savers, butterscotch pudding, and butterscotch sundaes are among my fondest memories of eating this sweet, buttery, toffee like treat.  Does that make me vintage, too?!

This Butterscotch Cream Roll Up Cake will now join the ranks of my favorite butterscotch confections.  Start with a sponge cake that will melt in your mouth, layer it with butterscotch whipped cream and toasted sliced almonds, and roll it all together!

But it’s how this sponge cake is rolled that makes this not your typical roll up cake . . . . . [Read more...]

Vintage Cakes: Maple Pecan Chiffon Cake with Brown Butter Frosting

“HOW BEAUTIFUL A DAY CAN BE WHEN KINDNESS TOUCHES IT.”  George Elliston

Maple Pecan Chiffon Cake with Brown Butter Frosting | From My Sweet Heart

Well it is the 20th of the month which means it’s time for The Cake Slice bakers to reveal another cake!  Led by our wonderful leader, Paloma, of The Coffee Shop; The Cake Slice is a great group of bakers who are baking our way through the book, Vintage Cakes by Julie Richardson.

August’s selection is a chiffon cake which is subtly sweetened with maple syrup and studded with toasted pecans.  A sweet and creamy browned butter icing tops it all off.  I can’t remember if this was a cake I voted for or not.  But something occurred out of the blue one day, which had me even more excited to bake this particular cake. Vintage Cakes: Red Velvet Cake

WE ARE HOMESICK MOST FOR THE PLACES WE HAVE NEVER KNOWN.”  Carson McCullers

Red Velvet Cake | From My Sweet Heart

The thing I think I love most about baking from Vintage Cakes by Julie Richardson, is the ability to go back in time to experience memories that were never mine in the first place. I have always wished I had some amazing recipes, passed down through generations of scrappy, resourceful women, who expressed their love of their families through baking.  But the reality is, my history of baking begins with me.  So I am enjoying baking my way through this book, along with a group of wonderful women, who truly appreciate the nostalgia as well.  This month, The Cake Slice Bakers made a really beautiful and absolutely scrumptious Red Velvet Cake.  While I have never been a fan of red velvet anything, these pictures will show you how Ms. Richardson’s recipe won me over. . . . . Espresso Cupcakes with Sweet Mascarpone Frosting

I HAVE MEASURED OUT MY LIFE WITH COFFEE SPOONS.”  T. S. Eliot

Espresso Cupcakes with Sweet Mascarpone Frosting | From My Sweet Heart

There was a time when I believed that I enjoyed the aroma of coffee more than the taste.  But over time,  I have really come to enjoy the flavor.  I don’t drink it daily, but I love coffee, both hot and cold.  And I love how coffee brings a savoriness to sweets like ice cream and cupcakes!  When I first came upon the recipe for these cupcakes, I was really intrigued by the combination of ingredients.  I would never have thought to put lemon zest and marsala wine in coffee cupcakes!  But I thought about running a wedge of lemon along the rim of my espresso cup and it made sense!  There was something else that I really enjoyed about these cupcakes . . . . . Pumpkin Pecan Cupcakes with Maple Cream Cheese Frosting

“I WOULD RATHER SIT ON A PUMPKIN AND HAVE IT ALL TO MYSELF, THAN BE CROWDED ON A VELVET CUSHION.”  Henry David Thoreau

Pumpkin Pecan Cupcakes with Maple Cream Cheese Frosting | From My Sweet Heart

I often walk this fine line of trying to be creative or walking off of the deep end!  And what I’ve learned is that sometimes you just have to leave well enough alone.  Keep things simple and let the ingredients speak for themselves.  And for me, this applies most of all to baking cupcakes.  Maybe I’ve been watching Cupcake Wars too much!  And if you’ve ever seen that show….they combine some funky flavors in one cupcake! But you will find this pumpkin cupcake recipe to be pretty straightforward.  What works well with pumpkin?  For me, it was the warming spices of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and allspice combined with the cool tang of cream cheese, the toasty crunch of pecans and the sweetness of a drizzle of maple syrup.  If these speak to you then……. ‘I Wish It Were My Birthday’ Cake

“IT TAKES AS MUCH ENERGY TO WISH AS IT DOES TO PLAN.”  Eleanor Roosevelt

I Wish it Were My Birthday Cake | From My Sweet Heart

Yesterday, I picked up a fabulous cookbook by Sherry Yard.  And in it, she talked about her earliest memories of baking.  And then I realized, there is no history of baking in my family.  In fact, my history of baking starts with me!  And it started rather late in my life.  So I tried to search back on any memories I had of instances where my curiosity about baking was piqued.  And I recalled a bakery near my home that I would go to for the most amazing cakes!  They only sold 4 or 5 different kinds.  But they were the kind of cakes I can only imagine a grandmother would bake!  And there was one in particular.  A yellow cake with chocolate frosting and pieces of penny candy and confetti and bows all over it.  Every time I saw that cake in the bakery I would think to myself…..‘awwww….I wish it were my birthday’!

And so yesterday, when I realized I was the beginning of the baking history in my family…I decided to start a tradition.  If you feel like celebrating your life….don’t wait till your birthday to do it! And so I give you…..‘I Wish It Were My Birthday’ Cake!  This is an adaptation of Sherry Yard’s recipe and one of the most delicious yellow cakes I have ever tasted!  The thing about making your own celebration cake is…….. Chocolate Cupcakes with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

“LIFE IS UNCERTAIN.  EAT DESSERT FIRST.”  Ernestine Ulmer

Chocolate Cupcakes with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting | From My Sweet Heart

So I live in D.C. where there are an abundance of cupcake bakeries.  And it occurred to me one day….that I could do that!  Okay.  Maybe not in mass.  But I was certainly capable of making something better than a funfetti cupcake!  I am starting off the first post of this very new blog with this cupcake.  Because this was my first attempt at making a “fancy cupcake”.  And it is one of the most scrumptious things…..
