Goober Cupcakes

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO HAVE A HAPPY CHILDHOOD.”  Tom Robbins

Goober Cupcakes | From My Sweet Heart

I grew up in an age where penny candy was actually a penny!  And one of my fondest childhood memories was spending a dime at ‘The Corner Store’ and filling up a little paper bag with pieces of my favorite candy.  At the movies, however, I would always buy a box of Goobers.  I wonder how much they cost at the theater these days?!

What do you do when you want to relive a piece of your childhood?  Ride a bike?  Go to the zoo?  Eat a special sweet treat? [Read more...]

Vintage Cakes: Butterscotch Cream Roll Up Cake

INVENTION, MY DEAR FRIENDS, IS 93% PERSPIRATION, 6% ELECTRICITY, 4% EVAPORATION, AND 2% BUTTERSCOTCH RIPPLE.”  Willy Wonka

Vintage Cakes: Butterscotch Cream Roll Up Cake | From My Sweet Heart

Butterscotch is a wonderful creation dating back to England in the mid 1800′s.  That’s vintage enough for me!  And my favorite flavor growing up was always butterscotch.  Butterscotch life savers, butterscotch pudding, and butterscotch sundaes are among my fondest memories of eating this sweet, buttery, toffee like treat.  Does that make me vintage, too?!

This Butterscotch Cream Roll Up Cake will now join the ranks of my favorite butterscotch confections.  Start with a sponge cake that will melt in your mouth, layer it with butterscotch whipped cream and toasted sliced almonds, and roll it all together!

But it’s how this sponge cake is rolled that makes this not your typical roll up cake . . . . . [Read more...]

Vintage Cakes: Maple Pecan Chiffon Cake with Brown Butter Frosting

“HOW BEAUTIFUL A DAY CAN BE WHEN KINDNESS TOUCHES IT.”  George Elliston

Maple Pecan Chiffon Cake with Brown Butter Frosting | From My Sweet Heart

Well it is the 20th of the month which means it’s time for The Cake Slice bakers to reveal another cake!  Led by our wonderful leader, Paloma, of The Coffee Shop; The Cake Slice is a great group of bakers who are baking our way through the book, Vintage Cakes by Julie Richardson.

August’s selection is a chiffon cake which is subtly sweetened with maple syrup and studded with toasted pecans.  A sweet and creamy browned butter icing tops it all off.  I can’t remember if this was a cake I voted for or not.  But something occurred out of the blue one day, which had me even more excited to bake this particular cake. Vintage Cakes: Boston Cream Pie-lets

EXPECT EVERYTHING SO THAT NOTHING COMES UNEXPECTED.”  Norton Juster (The Phantom Tollbooth)

Vintage Cakes: Boston Cream Pie-lets | From My Sweet Heart

The Cake Slice Bakers are a wonderful group of women who share a passion for baking CAKES!  Led by the lovely Paloma of The Coffee Shop, we’ve been baking our way through Vintage Cakes by Julie Richardson.  And I really LOVE this book.  It’s a wonderful source of cakes from our past, tried and true, but often with a surprising twist.

Well this recipe was not at all what I expected and it really took me by surprise.  We all have a memory about a Boston Cream Pie that we love.  For me, it’s the combination of sweet pastry cream, vanilla sponge cake and chocolate ganache all together.  I love them just as well if they are in a cupcake or a donut.  But I wasn’t expecting them in a pudding!  So I am on the fence and needing to take another taste in a day or two before I can form a proper opinion.  What is your favorite part of a Boston Cream Pie? Vintage Cakes: Black and White Cake

INTO THE DARKNESS THEY GO, THE WISE AND THE LOVELY.”  Edna St. Vincent Millay

Black & White Cake | From My Sweet Heart

I have just experienced chocolate in a way that I have never known.  There is a depth of flavor to this cake that is so sophisticated.  Yet it plunges you into a place of darkness that is so utterly reassuring.  You’ve been afraid to enter it before.  And now, all you can think about is returning to it again and again.  If I told you I’ve eaten chocolate cake before, well I’ve been mistaken.  One bite of this dark chocolate cake had me closing my eyes and whispering, this is it.  This is truly it. Vintage Cakes: The Pink Cake

THE VERY PINK OF PERFECTION.”  Oliver Goldsmith

The Pink Cake | From My Sweet Heart

May I just start off by telling you how much I LOVE pink desserts?!  So when Paloma of The Coffee Shop, and leader of The Cake Slice bakers told us that The Pink Cake was up next, I was delighted. It most definitely is….a very pink perfection!  The book we are baking from is Vintage Cakes by Julie Richardson.  And this particular cake is an original of hers and one that is featured at her bakery, Baker & Spice.  Pink to me is such a shabby chic vintage color.  And so this recipe fits really well into this lovely book of retro cakes.

This is a rich, moist but light chocolate cake surrounded by a silky Swiss buttercream.  How does the buttercream get it’s beautiful pink color? [Read more...]

Vintage Cakes: Honeybee Cake

“BEES DO HAVE A SMELL, YOU KNOW, AND IF THEY DON’T THEY SHOULD, FOR THEIR FEET ARE DUSTED WITH SPICES FROM A MILLION FLOWERS.”  Ray Bradbury

Honeybee Cake | From My Sweet Heart

I like milk and sugar in my tea; and butter and jam on my biscuits.  So I’ve never given much thought to honey in the past.  Those amber jars on the grocery store shelf?  They all looked the same to me!  But a couple of years ago, my son came home from his summer landscaping job one day, with a jar of honey in hand.  It seems that his boss was also a bee keeper.  Really?  Now I’m intrigued!  And with one little swoosh of my finger, I was hooked!  There is nothing more luscious than fresh, local honey.  And I was ready to taste more.

So this month, I was thrilled that The Cake Slice Bakers voted on this Honeybee Cake.  [Read more...]

Vintage Cakes: Red Velvet Cake

WE ARE HOMESICK MOST FOR THE PLACES WE HAVE NEVER KNOWN.”  Carson McCullers

Red Velvet Cake | From My Sweet Heart

The thing I think I love most about baking from Vintage Cakes by Julie Richardson, is the ability to go back in time to experience memories that were never mine in the first place. I have always wished I had some amazing recipes, passed down through generations of scrappy, resourceful women, who expressed their love of their families through baking.  But the reality is, my history of baking begins with me.  So I am enjoying baking my way through this book, along with a group of wonderful women, who truly appreciate the nostalgia as well.  This month, The Cake Slice Bakers made a really beautiful and absolutely scrumptious Red Velvet Cake.  While I have never been a fan of red velvet anything, these pictures will show you how Ms. Richardson’s recipe won me over. . . . . Shoo-fly Cake

“GOOD, OLD FASHIONED WAYS KEEP HEARTS SWEET, HEADS SANE, HANDS BUSY.”  Louisa May Alcott

Shoo Fly Cake | From My Sweet Heart

More than anything else that I bake, I LOVE baking cakes

And when I began blogging, I happened upon a couple of blogs that featured a group known as The Cake Slice Bakers.  They always featured some amazing cakes, yet I could not find much information about them.  A secret society of cake bakers?  I wanted in!  I am so fortunate to have been invited to be a member.  The women in this group are fun and fabulous bakers and you can find them listed at The Cake Slice .  In the 2012-2013 season, we baked from . . . . .
