Blood Orange & Poppy Sherbet

ORANGE IS THE HAPPIEST COLOR.”  Frank Sinatra

Blood Orange & Poppy Sherbet | From My Sweet Heart

I agree!  Orange is such a cheerful color!

As fruits go, I love oranges.  And I especially crave them right around now.  The holidays are over.  My months of decadent eating are a fading memory.  And I’m excited for recipes that include bright, tangy citrus.  AND, blood oranges are now in season!

What I love about blood oranges is that they are sweet and tangy and vary so much in their unique color.  I decided to use some to create this lovely blood orange and poppy seed sherbet.  Combining the juice with cream lends this beautiful peachy pink color.  The sherbet is both sweet and tart.  And the contrasting black poppy seeds provide such a delicate crunch.  [Read more...]

Milk Chocolate & Vanilla Pudding Pops

IN EVERY REAL MAN A CHILD IS HIDDEN THAT WANTS TO PLAY.”  Friedrich Nietzsche

Milk Chocolate & Vanilla Pudding Pops | From My Sweet Heart

Oh to be a kid again!

I never had the opportunity to travel in my childhood.  But summers still felt very carefree.  And it was the very simple, little things that brought the greatest pleasure.  Like running through the sprinkler in the backyard on a hot day, going to the county fair, or running frantically for my money when I heard the ice cream truck approaching the neighborhood!

Well those days of chasing down the ice cream man are over!  Not only do I enjoy making my own ice cream.  I’ve now ventured into making a variation on a home made ‘fudgesicle’.  These sweet and creamy frozen pops are made with milk chocolate and vanilla puddings.  It’s my contribution to the Improv Cooking Challenge this month.  Once a month, Kristen of The Frugal Antics of a Harried Homemaker challenges us to put two ingredients together in any recipe of our choice.  This month, we were to combine chocolate and vanilla.  Two flavors near and dear to my heart!  And here’s my chilly spin on it all. Frozen Chocolate Tiramisu

“€œWHEN I’M DOWN DOWN DOWN DOWN DOWN CAN YOU PICK ME UP?” Isak Strand

Frozen Chocolate Tiramisu | From My Sweet Heart

We can all use a little pick me up now and then. And so I think that tiramisu, in any form, was aptly named. This Frozen Chocolate Tiramisu is my ‘€˜pick-me-up’€™ contribution to The Chocolate Party; where this month we were asked to pair chocolate and coffee! . A light chocolate sponge cake is drenched in an espresso and Kahlua syrup and layered with coffee chip and stracciatella gelato.

The Chocolate Party was created by Roxana, of Roxana’s Home Baking. It’s a fun and fabulous party that anyone may join. Once a month Roxana pairs an ingredient with chocolate. And we all get to do our thing with it. This month I am happy to incorporate coffee, in the form of ice cream, into this recipe.   [Read more...]

Lemon Ladyfinger Semifreddo

I’m taking the Blue Ribbon Challenge!

Lemon Ladyfinger Semifreddo | From My Sweet Heart

Well this is my first month participating in the Blue Ribbon Challenge!  This wonderful group is created and hosted by Anna from Crunchy Creamy Sweet.  Once a month, Anna chooses a delectable food theme.  We simply make it in any way we desire, post about it, and link up! The next day, we vote!  And the winner earns the coveted Blue Ribbon Badge!  Anna is such a sweetheart and this is such great fun!   So I encourage everyone to come and join in!  Follow the links for more information!

This month, the theme was semifreddo!  I have only attempted this once before when I made a Pistachio, Vanilla & Strawberry Semifreddo.  And though I think they turned out well, I must admit, I think ice cream is easier to make.  I don’t own an electric hand mixer…..so my arms got a work out with my whisk!  The result, however, is nothing short of sublime!  Lemony, light and luscious!  And this time, I added a hidden treat . . . . . Toasted Mochalaska

“EVERY GREAT ACHIEVEMENT IS THE VICTORY OF A FLAMING HEAT.”  Ralph Waldo Emerson

Toasted Mochalaska | From My Sweet Heart

Well I decided what to do with the leftover coffee ice cream from the Baked Sunday Mornings.  As you may recall, I felt that the ice cream had an unusual, but tasty, salty quality to it.  So I felt pairing it with something sweeter might help round it out a bit.  And what better sweet thing than chocolate!  The traditional baked alaska is such a ’50s dessert.  But sometimes nostalgia is a good thing if we can put a slightly new twist on it.  So I decided to use brownies studded with toffee bits in place of cake.  And coffee ice cream covered in sweet meringue that is not baked, but toasted with my kitchen blowtorch!  (I’ve been dying to pull that out again).  You know…this can be a quick weeknight dessert by using your favorite bakery or store bought brownie; and your favorite flavor of ice cream from your grocer’s freezer.  (I sound like a commercial here!)  And all you would have to do is whip up the meringue and torch it.  All in all….a pretty quick assembly.  But here’s what to do if you want to make this yummy treat from scratch….. Spiked Peach Limeade Granita

“YOU ARE ICE AND FIRE; THE TOUCH OF YOU BURNS MY HANDS LIKE SNOW.”  Amy Lowell

Spiked Peach Limeade Granita | From My Sweet Heart

This icy treat has a fire all it’s own!  Chilly to my tongue, but definitely warms my heart!  It is  hard to believe that something so ridiculously easy can taste so amazingly good!  Refreshing?  Yes!  A great combination of flavors, but the rum most definitely shines through! [Read more...]
